for Jeannette Lambermont-Morey

"When I first met Jeannette, I was intimidated. The fact that she regularly directed at Stratford would make any acting student feel a little nervous. Having now worked with Jeannette on three different occasions, I can with high confidence say that working with Jeannette has been one of the highlights of my theatrical career thus far.
Her passion for her students' success cannot be denied. She sees the best of you and works to bring out the strong, truthful performances she knows lies beneath the surface. Under her tutelage, I have seen performers utterly transform into the artists they were meant to be.
The rehearsal hall becomes a playground as much as a workshop and you leave every rehearsal staggered by what you have accomplished. The flexibility of her approach, the range of exercises that she brings with her, and the sense of fun and play that she inspires makes her students feel free to explore in a safe environment, but that also leads to impressive results.
One of the things I love about working with Jeannette is that you never feel like you are a student. Every show she helms is an opportunity to flex her directing muscle as much as she allows us to develop our acting muscles. This creates an atmosphere that is not teacher-student, but one where everyone is seen as an artist and treated as such. I truly believe that by treating her students as artists, she allows us to become them.
Even having worked with her as often as I have, I still feel that there is so much I can learn from Jeannette. She has phenomenal amounts of advice and guidance to offer any student of theatre whether it be acting, directing, designing or producing. Furthermore, she has her finger on the pulse of everything that is happening in Toronto (and indeed, Canadian) theatre, which I think is fundamental to any acting teacher. It shows her commitment to instruct the next generation of Canadian theatre creators in what lies outside their theatre school's doors.
When I came to George Brown, I did not know that we would have the opportunity to work with Jeannette, but now that I am on the verge of graduation, I could not have imagined my time here without her. She is everything you want in a teacher and director."

"I had the pleasure of being taught by Jeannette at George Brown Theatre school in 2007. During my years at theatre school I was able to pick up certain techniques and skills in order to achieve my full potential as an actor. Jeannette was an enormous part of my growth. She creates an environment for students that allows them to take risk, and be vulnerable, but also pushing them to strive for the potential she sees in them. For me, I struggled with understanding and truthfully portraying classical text. I thought it was beyond me. Through her methods of teaching and the wonderful person she is, she broke down walls for me that I never knew existed. Jeannette taught me how to actually listen to another actor. The first time I was overwhelmed by emotion in a scene was being directed by Jeannette. It was unlike anything I had felt before. Because of her, I now know what it is to dig deep and scrape and squeeze a scene and a character for everything they’re worth. I owe a lot of my success to Jeannette. She has always been such a positive, supportive presence in my life, and I am happy now, outside of school, to call her my friend. She is one of the most influential teachers I have ever had."

Her passion for storytelling is palpable and her excitement contagious. "Jeannette approaches classical text with extreme insight, depth of knowledge, and intelligence. She helped me to understand in a very practical way how to work with classical text and how to find specificity in long passages that can at times feel like daunting mountains to climb. She is exactly what is needed in theatre schools and companies taking on big classical projects. The first time I worked with Jeannette was the first time I began to really understand how to work on that kind of material. Brilliant woman, exceptional teacher."

"As a stage manager, I have had the pleasure and honour of working with Jeannette for many years, under a variety of conditions. Watching how she is able to suss out what makes each student tick, what they need to succeed and how best to assist them on their personal journeys is both inspiring and humbling. She goes to extraordinary lengths to ensure each student is nurtured and at the same time challenged, to achieve their very best. I marvel at her dedication, professionalism and work ethic."

"What sets Jeannette apart from the average teacher is one simple and integral thing: investment. I have never met a teacher who so willingly welcomes the vulnerability required in investing entirely in her students."

"Jeannette is one of THE most focused, passionate, and detailed directors I have ever had the privilege of working with. Especially on classical texts, which is what I have the most experience working with her on.
She approaches her work with a massive breadth of knowledge and curiosity, which is deeply inspiring to have as a leader in the room.

The work that she did with me pushed me past where I was "comfortably" holding myself back and put me at the height of my ability. She put literally taught me to push past my own boundaries as an actor and trust the invigoratingly detailed groundwork we had laid down so that I could fly!

Every time I have worked with her i have left feeling both strong, and confident in my choices which let me be totally free within. A killer combination to experience as an actor."

"Jeannette Lambermont-Morey is a wonderful teacher and director. She played a crucial mentorship role in my development as a writer and actor: the hours I spent with Jeannette when I was all of 16 and 17 years old had a huge influence on my professional life over the next decade (and counting). Whether she was coaching me on a Shakespeare audition or offering feedback on my earliest efforts as a playwright, Jeannette’s remarkable intelligence and passion gave me a model for how an artist might exist in the world: curious, searching, rigorous—with a commitment that involves the whole human person. I’m intensely grateful for her belief in me, and for the time she dedicated–for no gain and no reason besides her profound vocation as a teacher–to helping me discover my own fledgling vocation. I’m honoured to have been among her protégés."
